Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) – Virus known to cause respiratory infection in humans especially in young children, adults with multiple co-morbidities and immune compromised individuals.
SYMPTOMS – Flu like symptoms
- Cough
- Fever
- Sore throat and congestion
- Breathing difficulties
It’s getting social coverage because of two reasons
- China reported it. COVID SCARE- comes to mind when we hear china and virus.
- There is no particular treatment.
Only symptomatic relief can be given in the form of hydration, Fever control and oxygen therapy in case of respiratory distress.

SAFETY MEASURES FOR PREVENTION AGAINST HMPV VIRUS
HAND HYGIENE-
- Remember to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after coughing and sneezing. It’s a simple step that keeps you and those around you safe and health!
- Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer
- Keep your hands off your face unless they’re clean and freshly washed.
BASIC ETIQUETTE –
- Use of tissue or inside if an elbow to cover mouth and nose while cough and sneezing.
- Wear masks in crowded areas and while you are symptomatic to avoid spread
AVOID CLOSE CONTACT –
- Keep a safe distance from individuals who are sick with respiratory symptoms
- If you’re feeling unwell or showing signs of a respiratory illness, it’s best to rest at home.
SANITIZING SURFACES –
Frequently clean and disinfect surfaces that are commonly touched, Such as door knobs, light switches and mobile devices
EDUCATION AND AWARENESS –
- Stay informed and updated regarding local health advisories and recommendations and shares this information with friends and family.
- Maintain a healthy lifestyle such as good nutrition, regular exercise , adequate sleep and stress management.
- Limit exposure of vulnerable groups such as elderly population, young children (<14 yrs old ) and immunocompromised individuals to crowded places.
